Do you like eating candy? Imagine if you and your 4 friends, Ashley, Brenda, Carol, and Diana, decide to bring some candy to share with each other.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

However, you guys don\u2019t bring the same amount. Ashley brings 8 pieces, Brenda brings 3 pieces, Carol brings 12 pieces, Diana brings 4 pieces, and you bring 8 pieces.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Because you guys are friends, you agree on splitting the candy pieces so that everyone gets an equal amount. How would you accomplish this? Here is where you can use your math skills:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n

First, gather the candy pieces into one large pile and count how many pieces are in it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Second, divide this number that you just counted by the number of people in the group. In this case, there are 5 people (you and your 4 friends), so you would divide by 5.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Writing this out as an equation, you get: $\\frac{8+3+12+4+8}{5} = 7$. So each person gets 7 pieces. This value is called the average, or the mean<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In general, you can find the mean <\/em>by adding up the numbers, then dividing by how many numbers there are.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Have you heard of median, mode or range? Do you know how to find them? Well, continue reading to learn how to calculate these three values.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It is important that you first list the numbers in order from smallest to greatest: 3, 4, 8<\/strong>, 8, 12. The median<\/em> is the number in the middle of the list. Here, this would be 8.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Let\u2019s say Ashley is sick today, and only 4 people brought candy. The list would be 3, 4, 8, 12. There\u2019s no middle number here. How would you find the median? You do this by finding the average <\/em>of the middle two numbers. This would be $\\frac{4+8}{2}= 7$. So now you know how to find the median of any list.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The mode is the number that occurs most often in the list. What is the mode in this list (3, 4, 8, 8, 12)? There is one 3, one 4, two 8\u2019s, and one 12. Therefore, the mode is 8. (The median and mode aren\u2019t usually the same value, it\u2019s just the same for this example).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Finally, you can calculate the range <\/em>by doing: maximum value – minimum value. The maximum value in this list is 12 pieces, and the minimum is 3 pieces. Therefore, the range is 12-3 = 9 pieces.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
