You probably have many friends. You may be very close to some, while not as close to others. You may even have some enemies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lets say Ashley is your friend, and Brenda is also friends with Ashley. Brenda is a friend of your friend, so you would most likely consider her to be your friend too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Friend of Friend = Friend<\/span><\/p>\n

What about Carol, who is really mean to Ashley? We can say Carol is Ashley’s enemy. If you see Carol making fun of your friend Ashley, you probably won\u2019t try to be friends with her either. You may even consider Carol your enemy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Enemy of Friend \u00a0= Enemy<\/span><\/p>\n

But you know Diana really likes Carol, and she doesn\u2019t care that Carol is being rude to your friend. Then, you may not like Diana either.<\/span><\/p>\n

Friend of Enemy \u00a0= Enemy<\/span><\/p>\n

Suppose Emma also doesn’t like Carol. She thinks that Carol is not a nice person because she makes fun of others. Then you and Emma probably have something in common to talk about. So, probably want to be Emma\u2019s friend.<\/span><\/p>\n

Enemy of Enemy \u00a0\u00a0= Friend<\/span><\/p>\n

To summarize, you have:<\/span><\/p>\n

Friend of Friend = Friend
\n<\/span>Enemy of Friend \u00a0= Enemy
\n<\/span>Friend of Enemy \u00a0= Enemy
\n<\/span>Enemy of Enemy \u00a0\u00a0= Friend<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, here are the multiplication signs you may have forgotten:<\/span><\/p>\n

Positive \u00b7 Positive = Positive
\n<\/span>Negative \u00b7 Positive = Negative
\n<\/span>Positive \u00b7 Negative = Negative
\n<\/span>Negative \u00b7 Negative = Positive<\/span><\/p>\n

If you replace \u2018friend\u2019 with \u2018positive\u2019, \u2018enemy\u2019 with \u2018negative\u2019, and \u2018of\u2019 with \u2018\u00b7\u2019 (multiplication sign), you immediately get the algebraic rules. <\/span><\/p>\n

Friend = Positive
\n<\/span>Enemy \u00a0= Negative<\/span><\/p>\n

Isn’t this cool? You can also apply them as quotient rules too:<\/span><\/p>\n
