The built-in sensor initiates a series of folding instructions, and collapses the plumbing and supports. When your five years old kid comes in, the basin adjusts itself again to the correct height.

You sit down to have your breakfast. The furniture is no longer a single-purpose item that takes up space. Desks, tables, chairs, countertops, cloth stands, and even the wall, balcony, and rails can be all configured from a single multi-purpose piece of furniture. In fact, you call it a “multniture”. You pick up your utensil that looks like a fork to eat your eggs. A twist to it and it becomes a spoon for your cereal. In the meantime, your son turns his utensil into a knife to spread butter, while your wife pulls a lever that turns it into a pair of chopsticks. She then swivels a plate that triggers a series of internal petal folds that turn it into a bowl for her soup.

Stepping out of the house, you settle in a self-driving convertible with your wife and kids. The car weighs less than 200 pounds and is made of lightweight polymer and graphene. After dropping off your youngest kid, the car collapses into a tricycle. When your wife gets off, it becomes a bicycle. The engine internally adjusts to run on lower watt power. When your last kid drops off, the car converts to a unicycle. In your mind, you are wondering why 21st-century people called their car a convertible when it only removed the top.

Your cellphone rings. Since you are sitting, the phone is folded within the layers of your jeans where you can most conveniently pick up. While talking, you arrive at the office and walk up the stairs. The phone slides seamlessly into your collar. It looks like your clothes and phone are integrated into a single foldable and configurable piece.

Going out for lunch in California weather, you are unsure whether it will rain. But the sun hat on your head, inspired by a ladybug’s Z-shaped folded wings, can be pulled out into an umbrella or raincoat when needed. Even the sleeves of your shirt can be torn out to become an extra pair of socks.

You take a stroll to the nearby hospital to visit a colleague. He recently had spine surgery to replace a cervical disc. In just two hours, however, he has fully recovered because the surgery was performed by a non-invasive self-folding mini-robot within his body. The disc was prototyped by a new breakthrough that was inspired by origami tessellation designs. According to a survey by Mayo Clinic, 95% of surgeries in the country this year have been performed by non-invasive self-folding robots. Next door, you meet a marine biologist who had an artificial lung installed so that he can recycle air before exhaling. It will enable her to stay underwater for half an hour so that she can study the routine of dolphins. As you walk out, you say hello to a delivery man with removable and configurable exoskeleton limbs that assist his work.

Back in the office, your boss wants you to fly to the east coast for a meeting. There is no need to travel to busy airports only to wait for 2 hours and squeeze into an enormous airplane with hundreds of passengers. A personal helicopter drone is waiting outside. It takes off quietly and smoothly. In mid-air, the drone swings its 2 pairs of rotors vertically through hybrid inverse folds and turns them into a pair of wings of a supersonic jet. You arrive at the rooftop of a building in New York in 20 minutes. Instead of waiting for the elevator, you put on a bright colored jacket. It inflates and unfolds into a glider, and as you jump off from the building, it guides you to the landing spot of a conference hall on the second floor. Five minutes later, you start your presentation. Soon after, you are back in San Francisco for dinner with your wife and kids.

As you comfortably snug yourself in bed and reflect on the day’s activities, you see a documentary screening on a holographic panel. It is about the history of origami-inspired inventions, pioneered by a group of college students in the late 2010s to 2020s. You smile. Then you fall into your dream.

You do this subconsciously every day.
